Con 12 nominaciones, THE POWER OF THE DOG de Jane Campion es la cinta con mayor número de nominaciones de cara a la próxima edición de los premios de la Academia. La Academia ha conseguido llenar sus 10 cupos de films, el total de los posibles para optar al Óscar a la Mejor película. La fotografía reserva espacio para cuatro dramas familiares, dos musicales (uno también de tinte familiar y además remake de una cinta francesa que ganó el César), dos comedias (una sátira y otra romántica), un film fantástico y otro de ciencia ficción. Salvo la japonesa Drive my car de Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (consiguió cuatro nominaciones: Mejor película, Mejor película internacional, guion y director) y Licorice Pizza de Paul Thomas Anderson, se trata de cine de la casa, industrial y esta vez con guiños a las agendas políticas que han signado los destinos del galardón en el último lustro y poco más. Esos guiños probablemente se sanjen premiando por partida doble a Jane Campion y su film The Power of the dog y celebrando el talento de Will Smith quien ha terminado por forjarse un film a su medida: King Richard (film sorprendentemente nominado por encima de otras notables apuestas, ni qué decir de CODA). Guillermo del Toro se ha colado con una de las piezas más hermosas de este 2021: Nightmare Alley. Mientras, Steven Spielberg se apunta un tanto con su versión de West Side Story, un film portentoso que debería darle por tercera vez el galardón a Mejor director si la presión sobre Jane Campion no ejerce efecto. Curiosamente, Spielberg y Campion ya se midieron 29 años atrás con La lista de Schindler y The Piano respectivamente; siendo Spielberg el ganador en los apartados a mejor dirección y mejor película. Quizás sea el momento de triunfo total para una de las directoras más importantes en las últimas cuatro décadas.
